How To Become A Guidance Counsellor

To become a Guidance Counsellor entails undertaking a one year full-time post-graduate programme in guidance and counselling (or its equivalent). These courses are run in UCC, TCD [M.Ed], NUI Maynooth, DCU and UL [Part time]. Click here for links to these courses.

  • Personal and Social Development
  • Experiental Group Work Theory and Practice
  • Career Development and Behaviour
  • Principles and Practice of Psychological Testing
  • Sociology of Education
  • Career Information Management

In addition, those wishing to practice in second level schools must meet the requirements of the Department of Education, i.e. normally a primary degree and a teaching qualification.
