Frank Mulvihill was elected President of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors and took up office on July 1st 2006. He is a practicing Guidance Counsellor at Coláiste Chríost Rí in Cork, the Presentation Brothers school where he received his own second-level education. Having graduated from Cork Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Food Science and Technology, he then acquired his degree in Science at University College Cork. Later he completed his Higher Diploma in Education and his Masters Degree in Education at UCC.
He also holds a First Class Honours Level 7 qualification in Equine Science from the University of Limerick. A Former Science teacher, he has many years of experience in Business and was responsible for sending over 340 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Bosnia and Croatia during the war there from 1991 –1999. Frank is Married to Ursula and is the guardian of two boys Colm and Seán whose parents died at a young age. The boys’ mother was Ursula’s sister.
Frank’s interests are many but particularly the breeding and training of showjumping horses. He is a qualified equestrian coach and coaches his two boys. Both have won International awards and have represented Ireland abroad.
A holder of three Munster Colleges Gaelic football medals and one County Colleges medal, he also represented Cork at soccer. One of his greatest achievements was as trainer of Fáilte Ireland’s senior Young Chef of the Future winners in 2004, when two of his students won the competition without having studied Home Economics and without having a cooker in their school! He remarks that “with talent and ambition anything is possible”.
