Conference 2016 to be held in the University of Limerick

The Institute of Guidance Counsellors (IGC) has announced that the 2016 IGC Annual Conference & AGM will take place at the University of Limerick.  The conference, which takes place over the weekend of 26th to 28th February, is being hosted by the Tipperary branch of the IGC.  Approximately 450 guidance counsellors from all over the country are expected to attend the event.

Dr Pat Phelan, Associate Registrar, speaking on behalf of the University stated “Guidance counsellors are important stakeholders to the University and we look forward to welcoming conference delegates next year. This conference has particular significance following the recent announcement by the Minister for Education and Skills of revisions to the assessment and grading structure of the leaving certificate, a revised common points scale and broader undergraduate programme entry in 2017”.

Over the last two years the University of Limerick has been working in partnership with the Mid-Western branch of the IGC to build on its relationship with guidance counsellors. The conference provides a fantastic opportunity for the university to show its continued support of the profession.

The Institute of Guidance Counsellors represents over 1350 practitioners in second level schools, third level colleges, adult guidance services, private practice and in other settings.  The University of Limerick offers a two year part-time postgraduate programme that qualifies practicing teachers and other professionals to become qualified guidance counsellors.  A number of guidance counsellors are graduates of the programme including the current President of the IGC, Betty Mc Laughlin. In speaking about the conference Betty, a native of Bulgaden, Kilmallock, County Limerick, said “We are delighted to announce the University of Limerick as the main sponsor and the host to our National Conference in 2016. It will certainly be hosted in a spectacular location and we are certain that it will be marked as one of the best IGC events to date!”
